Head to Trader Joe’s

It will, of course, sound like culinary barbarism. Foodie heresy. Bistro blasphemy, even. Yet to any red blooded Canadian, it’s like mana from heaven.

French fries, gravy, and cheese curds.

Or as it’s known here, poutine. Sound iffy? Awful, even? Then why is Trader Joe’s now selling it?

Add Montreal smoked meat and it’s so sinfully good, it’s worth risking a heart attack for. Now available at Trader Joe’s, without the smoked meat.

For now.

    That dish looks hard-core! lol

Being a veggie leaves me with less choice. But I simply cannot refuse a French fry. Looks yummy. Damn…I just broke my fast.

With poutine, there is only love and forgiveness. Be at peace.

Ever been to Smoke’s Poutinerie? They have an AMAZING assortment of things you can add to the ‘basic’ of fries, gravy and curds. And they have an INCREDIBLE veggie version- I actually prefer the veggie gravy over the ‘traditional’ gravy. And they have one with green peas, mushrooms and caramelized onions… MMM. There’s one a couple blocks from home. Dangerous.

No. Been meaning too. My 17 year old son visits Saturday for XMAS, so we’ll have to check it out. Veggie sounds interesting. Thanks, Cole.

I thought the curds were mashed taters lol! Which is just as awesome btw…. tater overload…. yep, Southern to the core….

      Hi Lilith,

Thanks for dropping by. Northern sort of Southern!

Tell Trader Joe, I´ll have two plates of that and if be have a heart attack in his premises, that´s looks too good to let it pass and to risk a heart attack. Hey! We Spanish are the red blooded…you guy´s are freezing over there.

Been down to -24 degrees C in Ottawa. Quite cold, more like January-February temperatures.

      Brrrrrrr.

Pouting may not be healthy, but it is good.

      • charlypriest December 18, 2013 at 6:00 am #

I don´t know what the word healthy is, if it taste good I´m in.

Does it come with a coupon for a free angioplasty?

Oh my… I need that. Now.

Sounds different. Chips and gravy I can do (and love) but cheese curd?? With gravy?? I guess it’s not something I’ll get the chance to try any time soon but I wish you well in your enjoyment. 😉

And this comment coming from the land where a free egg (without asking) is included on top of every chicken burger or sandwich! };-)>

Australia Rules, indeed! In whole life-cycle food management. (Actually, the egg on chicken does make sense, in a way.)

Poutine is actually surprisingly good, and decidedly not healthy.

      • suzjones December 20, 2013 at 4:37 pm #

I can’t say that I’ve had the experience of an egg added to everything 🙂 although a fried egg on burgers is pretty nice. 😉
Anything with chips and gravy is not healthy lol but certainly tastes good.

Wow, that looks divine! Though, I am pretty sure that my arteries just clogged from the picture alone lol… Everything in moderation my dear boy, we want you kept healthy and writing 😉

Indeed we do, Madam WFPC. (My cousin’s still for sale.)

      Hey! Who does your nails?

Okay, I know you want me to keep it real. I wrinkled my nose…wondered whAt in the world thAt was. Looked kinda…gross. LOL. Reading the answer, the Holistic Chef (have you seen my food blog?) still found it so but the Wayfarer could see it would be sinfully good, dredging up memories of her diet from yesteryear. We keep TJ’s in business. Must go at least twice a week. But I buy with discretion, as I do anywhere. Gotta read the labels. That is, those of us who wAnt to. LOL.

      HW,

You’ve made me smile again. Yes, it is difficult to present poutine in a culinarily artistic fashion. Still, it is surprisingly good. I had one local chef make it with spatzel fries, duck gravy, shredded duck, and I believe cheese curds. Outstanding.

Haven’t seen your food blog. I am Grade A inept as a chef. My significant other marvels that I could not anticipate that baked beans and canned tuna would not go together.

      They don’t.

TJ’s poutine sounds like it might be fun. Plus it could lead to a home schooling adventure in exploring Quebec. Geography, history, etc.

Laughing. “it could lead to a home schooling adventure in exploring Quebec. Geography, history, etc.” Don’t forget physiology, gastronomy, holistic health.

You don’t cook. But we all eat. And do sugar. You might chk out the How to Eat and the Wonder Years.

To me it sounds hideous, but I’ll take your word for it, I’m willing to try almost anything once… Nice blog you have here, I’ll mosey around some and comment occasionaly, but mostly I lurk, except when I don’t, hee hee 🙂 I’m contrary that way…

      PsiFiGal,

So nice of you to drop by. Lurkers always welcome.

Yes, it probably does sound hideous. However, on a cold Canadian winter day, it is a gloriously hot collection of yummy calories to keep a belly full and happy. What it does to arteries, on the other hand, …

Mary, We’ll have to talk sci fi at some point in the New Year too.

    Madam Aussa,

You honour me! BTW, can someone please define a ping back for poor old me?
